Custom Build Left Handed Neck Thru Electric Guitar – Part 3

The Tricky Bits
Part 1| Part 2| Part 3| Part 4
How it all began…
Allan lives and works in Glasgow and as a left handed player has had a lot less choice of guitars over the years – he came on the Design Your Own Guitar Course in early 2012 and left behind his dream guitar ideas on a full scale drawing. These ideas & choices became a quote – he then paid his deposit and the roller coaster build began…
To infinity and beyond!
We want all our players to stand back at the end of a build and say ‘its exactly what I wanted and more’… but having almost infinite choice at the outset can sometimes be daunting. We don’t expect people to know everything they want or need…that’s all part of the process. Exploring options. Making choices. Updating quote. Its a two-way process where the final thing has evolved from the decisions made at every stage.
Left Handed? No problem.
Allan wanted an L/H electric – he really liked the Exotica model and its laminated thru neck with a slightly altered body shape which he drew himself on the design day, and after seeing a double stained and bursted quilted maple carve top in a magazine – he wanted something like that…
The Finish
All our finishing is done ‘in house’ here at the workshop by our master craftsman Billy – this one is a cellulose gloss – none more shiny!
The Trickiest Bit…
The Fernandez sustainer was not easy to fit – originally the two switches were soldered to the circuit board and there was no chance – luckily I have a very good friend who specializes in soldering of the tiniest order. Somehow he managed to remove the switches and add extension wires and that gave me just enough leeway to fit it into the control cavity. After that final assembly and setup was a breeze – you can see the finished photo’s in blog coming your way very soon!!
Your Turn?
If you have an idea for a guitar design that you would like to make into reality – contact us with your ideas or book yourself a design session – and lets get started!

Spotlight on…Custom Guitars & Bailey Design session
by Caz | Apr 2, 2014 | !Bailey Guitars, Custom guitars, Design Your Own, News and Events
T minus 4 days…and counting…
Custom Build Service
Here at Baileys we make all sorts of guitars – our own models of electric (Bandsman, Curve, Exotica) acoustic (Bootlegger, Moonshiner, Sweet P and Big D) and of course the flagship Archtops ( Kithara and Coryphee) – all named by Bailey supporters in a previous competition – However, not everyone wants their own version of Mark’s idea of a great guitar – some folk want to turn the dream guitar they have in their head into a reality (and some of those dreams are quite something if you don’t mind us saying so). That’s where we come in – Mark can make what is in your head become a playing instrument (as long as your ideas can be made to work within the laws of physics and the known universe…we have had one or two that didn’t…but we love a dreamer !)
NOW ONLINE!
We have moved into the space age here at the workshop – on Saturday we tested our first internet live stream custom design session (using google hangout)…thanks to Mark Screeton who last week commissioned a new guitar, after letting us guinea pig our new online design session. Previously most people visited the workshop to commission their guitar – here is a video of a design session that took place here
Now, instead of the expense of coming here…you can do it from the comfort of your own home…all you need is a webcam and a spare hour or so.
We do charge for this one on one time with Mark – £89.95…but if you go ahead and get it made then it is deducted from the final quote – you can’t say fairer than that – and with our custom guitars starting from an out of this world £999… its not a giant leap at all.
Live long and prosper !
As the countdown to the Draw goes on, today’s high flying deal is a supersonic £200 voucher towards upgrades on any custom commission if you buy a design session (before the end of 5th April…) you can arrange anytime time that suits to do the session and the voucher will be valid for the next 6 months…and remember you can pay for any guitar by installments one a price agreed.
To Boldly Go
If you want to boldly go where quite a few men (and women) have gone before, book a session online – it makes a great gift and there’s no obligation to get the thing made…just a great experience.

Earth Hour, Summer Time and the Countdown Clock is ticking
by Caz | Mar 29, 2014 | !Bailey Guitars, News and Events
Only 8 days left of our 15th Anniversary Year…and to win a Bailey Guitar
The first lambs of the year were born this week, and it is an amazing reminder that the circle of life goes on and on – this is the tenth spring we’ve seen here and very soon Bailey Guitars 16th birthday will be upon us
Earth Hour is TONIGHT at 8:30pm millions of people across the world will turn off their lights for one hour as a global act of unity – if everyone has a go it is hoped that whole areas will go temporarily dark, but it’s more than that…its a global campaign to highlight some of the fantastic projects happening across the world.
Here’s what happened last year Earth Hour 2013-lights go out around the world
We’ll be asking Steve from Inverness to make sure the lights on his custom Archtop – The Spaceship – are turned off and we’ll be doing the same with our low energy LED’s and covering the solar light and watching the live updates on our laptop under a blanket (!) It’s pretty dark here most of the time anyway, but as we know well here at Baileys…every little helps
We put a lot of time and effort into making our guitars as planet friendly as possible – it makes sense on so many levels… and campaigns/events like Earth Hour are part of a much wider movement of individuals and organisations working to reduce waste, and make life fairer and healthier for all humans. In itself, reducing electricity consumption, or using reclaimed /FSC/ fair trade materials simply saves resources, but the shared & united action of all of us does much much more – highlighting to governments and large companies that we aren’t all just about getting our stuff cheap or at the expense of someone else
Making concious choices is really what Earth Hour is about – and letting those who make the big decisions on our behalf know that our opinions matters, and that we do actually care.
We think this is partly how we have managed to survive these last 15 years as small builders – we are not really a business..more a part of the global community – here and abroad. Our “customers” are people who have made a conscious choice – it’s become a community of its own.
Thanks to you all for your support with everything we’ve done so far..
So get your lights out, put the clocks forward and bring on the summer.. Bailey Guitars will be sweet 16 in just over a week…
Today is International Day of Forests and the Tree
by Caz | Mar 21, 2014 | !Bailey Guitars, News and Events
We love trees and forests!
Hug a Tree
…as without them, so much about our lives would be different. Just have a quick look around you now… how much can you see that is made from wood, card or paper ?
In the West we have a voracious appetite for wood, and the more exotic and beautiful the better… it has become a highly valuable commodity … traded and profited from over and over…and usually at the expense of the community that lives and works the land that where it grows.
We love wood
Here at Baileys, the woodier the better … but we know that some wood comes at a price that is too high to pay.
Unfortunately, many of the most highly prized guitar woods are on endangered , and trade prohibited lists...and rightly so. The problem is that the majority of guitarists want a guitar that looks, feels and plays like a guitar.. and so many of the green substitutes just aren’t the same
Wood is Good
It’s a conundrum – if we as a community don’t find ways to solve this problem…there will eventually be none left… Ebony, for example is already getting harder to get hold of … and that isn’t just bad for the world of guitars is it ?
Wood and trees are an amazing natural resources as they are truly sustainable and renewable – as long as greed and short term gain are not the main aims
Alternatives?
Like many guitar makers, we are experimenting with alternatives, and trying to make sure we buy and use responsibly- native timber, other companies “waste” ie offcuts, individual wood hoarders stashes (you know who you are ! ) old wood, reclaimed wood, etc etc etc… but our customers want the best, and often a specific look or quality to their instrument. (and the majority don’t choose us because of our green activities)
Fairly Traded Timber!
When we started in 1998, you could buy Fairly Traded tea, coffee, sugar, clothes, household items etc… even our nearest town is a Fair Trade town… but trying to buy fairly traded wood was impossible – we contacted Traidcraft, FoE, and Greenpeace, as we imagined there must be a community somewhere in the world we could make a direct link with – a small UK builder and our community, working fairly with another group who sustainably produce the wood we need. It seemed impossible…
But on this day of Forests and the Tree, when better to announce that for the last few months we have been working with an organisation called Sound and Fair set up precisely to do what we needed, and we are delighted to tell you that our first deliveries of wood have arrived from a community in Tanzania – African blackwood for fretboards, pod mahogany, paduak and panga panga for bodies and necks…ALL sustainably managed and approved.. and the first fairly traded FSC acoustic will be finished soon.
Sound and Fair deserves a blog of its own.. more to come about that and the new guitar…
Happy forest and tree day from us all here!
Care about our planet ??
If you would like a guitar made using fairly traded, FSC, or reclaimed wood please contact us with your requirements – our guitars are all made with renewable energy…and are some of the greenest guitars in the universe

Build Your Own First Guitar – BYO 333 – Veronica
by Caz | Mar 15, 2014 | Build Your Own, Guitar Making Students
Veronica ‘s first guitar
We first met Veronica at our exhibition & demo at the fantastic Darvel Music Festival, which she came to with her family on a wet Saturday morning in Darvel’s impressive town hall.
Veronica decided to come on our Build Your Own First Guitar Course, and made this in 5 days spread over a couple of months. There are limited options for customisation but the aim is to make a quality guitar, as simply as possible, so it could be repeated at home. Veronica liked the shape and simple lines.
The design of the guitar is based on the Bailey Bandsman with a few custom twists added by Veronica herself. She chose some extremely highly figured Jarrah for the cap and used an offcut to make a matching headstock veneer. She had already bought some Seymour Duncan pick ups she liked, and we fitted them into her new creation.
After 15 years of running build your own guitar courses we invented this one for those who didn’t have the money or time for a full on, all singing all dancing custom course, but wanted to learn the basic methods, all of which are covered on this one – and you get to take away your very own handcrafted masterpiece to amaze and impress your friends and family – even the younger members – Veronica has two young sons who are both starting to learn instruments, and were excited to come to see the workshop where “mummy” made her guitar.
We don’t know why we don’t get more women builders – but every builder starts on an equal footing in the workshop, and each first creation is as special as the next.
Veronica booked this experience for herself…but it makes a great gift
