How to put strings on a guitar
by Caz | Dec 28, 2011 | Acoustic guitars, Artists, Guitar Making Students, Repairs
This is the best way I have found to re-string a guitar
Filmed at this years London Acoustic Guitar Show for Elixir Strings this is me demonstrating to Martin Taylor how I go about re-stringing one of my acoustic guitars.
MASSIVE THANKS!
…to Martin and James for inviting me to do it.
Preston Reed’s Christmas Message
by Caz | Dec 22, 2011 | !Bailey Guitars, Artists, Preston Reed Signature Editions, Ukulele
Hope you enjoy it and Merry Xmas from us all at Bailey Guitars too!
Preston popped round the other day and spotted the new Bailey Myrtlewood Sopranino Ukulele – the instrument with a name longer than itself. The Sopranino is the smallest of the Uke family followed by Soprano, Concert, Tenor and Baritone in order of increasing size. This one is possibly the cutest thing I have made to date and brings a smile to the face of everyone who sees it. Like most folk he couldn’t help but pick it up and give it a strum and luckily for us his partner Cath caught it on her Iphone:
Build your own acoustic guitar – BYOA-017
by Caz | Dec 20, 2011 | !Bailey Guitars, Build Your Own, Build Your Own Guitar
Duncan made this acoustic guitar here at the Bailey workshop on our Build Your Own Guitar course
Duncan has been a few times before to build electric guitars, but this is his first acoustic. The shape is based on the Bailey Bootlegger but he designed his own bridge and chose a larger headstock than the standard. He also carefully selected every piece of timber from our wood store to make what has to be one of the most spectacular guitars ever made on the BYO course.
The body has Myrtlewood back and sides and a Sitka spruce top and is bound with rosewood. As if the wood itself wasn’t beautiful enough Duncan also used abalone for the rosette and crown inlays, not forgetting the elaborate ‘Watson/Eagle’ logo on headstock.
Imagine playing a guitar you have made yourself? Now you can!

Massive discounts – making way for the 2012 collection
Buy the guitar you’ve had your eye on and save up to £1000
In 2012 we aim to be the ‘greenest’ high end guitar makers in Europe, and have recently invested in a Cure-UV lacquer finishing system-and so we’d like to make room for our new models and newly finished instruments. To that end we are offering hundreds of pounds of reductions on much of our existing stock- these guitars should be out of their cases getting played!
Order ANY guitar in the shop before 20th December (offer extended to Noon 21st Dec) and we will courier it to you FREE of charge in time for Xmas.
To claim your extra shop discount register on-line and we will send you a voucher code which gives ADDITIONAL discounts on ALL the guitars (not just the specials). Existing shop customers should have already received their codes.
The voucher discount also applies to any custom guitars commissioned before the 7th Jan.
The offers are held on all guitars bought until the 7th Jan 2012, including free delivery
And don’t forget all guitars come with a hard case, set up to your choice of strings/ gauge, free Bailey shirt, pick and our full guarantee.
We don’t do finance here but we do have an instalment scheme – a deposit secures the guitar and removes it from the shop, and you pay off the balance as you can. We accept all ways to pay including over the phone, and of course we welcome any collections in person.
As always, any questions, queries and offers should be emailed to us if you can’t get us by phone
Happy Xmas to you

Build your own acoustic guitar – BYOA-015
by Caz | Dec 15, 2011 | Build Your Own, Build Your Own Guitar, Guitar Making Students
David Patterson finishes his acoustic guitar made on our Build your own course here in the Bailey workshop.
David was one of our first customers after we moved to our new workshop in the glorious countryside of South Ayrshire, he commissioned two guitars from me. He had a piece of wood under his bed which he had kept as he had always wanted to make a guitar (or two) but at the time he was too busy so I built them for him. Lately he has retired so found the time to finally achieve this. Nice job Dave.
Dave’s guitar was based on the Bailey Moonshiner but he chose all the wood and hardware himself so it is entirely his own spec.
He chose Rosewood for the back and sides paired with a Sitka Spruce soundboard. It has an abalone rosette and the body was bound with Flamed sycamore.
The neck was laminated – 2 pieces of mahogany around a core of flamed sycamore with black pinstripes. The fretboard and bridge is ebony – Dave designed his own shape for the bridge – he even put an abalone dot on each end.
For tuners he chose Gotoh 510 gold tuners and the pickup is the new Fishman Ellipse with onboard Aura.
Bailey Guitars Exhibited at House of Burns
by Caz | Dec 10, 2011 | !Bailey Guitars, News and Events
Opening weekend Display-Sat and Sunday 10/11 Dec
The New House of Burns Gift Shop & Gallery at Kirkoswald, kindly invited us to exhibit some of our instruments in their new art & craft gallery this weekend – the newly open building is part of the redevelopment of a historic part of South Ayrshire, and is the home of the Artisan Patisserie & bakery, where cakes, ice cream and mouth watering handmade chocolates are carefully crafted (you can see them being made).
The gallery will eventually house a full range of locally crafted items of all kinds, showing the skills of some of the huge numbers of Scottish, and locally based artists and craftspeople, to the folk who visit from all over the world.
The shop already stocks local produce and food items, and if the response to our own works of art is as good as our reactions to the ice cream and sweetie parlour, we are hoping to be part of the gallery display regularly in future
Thanks to Michael Poggi and all the staff at the shop and Souter Johnnie’s Inn for their help and making us so welcome
The Kithara Archtop, Quilted Moonshiner, our new satin burst, open headstock Companion (see pic above) and a flame topped electric are on display until shop close Sunday 11 Dec if you fancy a look.
Check out our shop for special seasonal prices with an extra 10% discount if you register to buy on line (and FREE delivery in the UK)

Build your own guitar – Shona – BYO 299
by Caz | Nov 17, 2011 | Build Your Own, Guitar Making Students
Shona finishes making a guitar for her son Neil
Shona made this guitar completely from scratch in 5 days on our ‘Build your own Guitar‘ course here at the Bailey workshop. She doesn’t play herself, so it is for her son Neil. As you can see it came out great- lucky Neil! He turned up at the end to check over his mum’s work before taking it away- I think that’s Christmas sorted there…
If you are not sure what to get the guitar player in your life why not consider sending them to build their own? We have a range of courses of varying duration and cost- Check prices and availability | More Bailey courses
