Build Your Own Acoustic- June 17-2010

Moyra and Doreen continue to build…….

Doreen and Moyra live locally so are able to come for 1 day at a time. Most people live too far away, so they have to take a train or fly in, and so they prefer to come for 5 days at a time. Carol is brilliant at fitting everyone in.

This is just 1 day from an ongoing ‘build your own acoustic’ course they are on which is spread over 12 days. They have already done quite a lot and will return to finish their guitars soon. I’ll keep ya posted.

Rosie completes his second guitar-BYO 284

Rosie bought one of them new fangled variax things from ebay so we could use the electrics for his BYO. He took great delight in ripping the bits out, and building them into his new guitar was a worthwhile challenge. It’s a shame they don’t supply the kit separately, so custom builders could use them without resorting to vandalism like this, but hey….anyone want the old body and neck…it’s yours….anyone else want to do this on the course? Thanks to Rosie we now have all the patterns…..B******d.(joke)

The guitar is able to replicate all kinds of guitar sounds humbuckers, single coils, acoustics, archtop, 12 strings, resonator…..and loads more…..even a sitar! Hmm……almost sounds like ’em as well (not joke)…….there are some weirdy ones but quite a lot of them are really excellent. Great job Rosie – it was a pleasure ‘avin ya, and thanks to Billy who sprayed the guitar.

Thanks to our webmaster for setting up this Blog for us.

We are still busy transferring everything from the old page, bringing this blog right up to date, and working on the overall appearance and functionality. There is a new lightning fast BYO gallery so you can see what previous students have been up to – If you have been on the course and your guitar is not here send me your favourite picture of it and I will pop it in.

I will also be adding useful tips for guitar making and maintenance- feel free to comment if you have any ideas.

Meanwhile let us know what you think…………I Hope you enjoy reading about what is happening in Bailey World. Home Page

Sea Foam Green with Binding – Part 1

Sea Foam Green with Binding – Part 1

Rosie’s guitar

Rosie made this guitar on the Bailey BYO course, he wanted a full gloss paint job. As there is only enough time for a matt or oiled finish on the course he left it with me to spray. I had to do a little final sanding before sealer coats and I masked the binding before applying the colour coats. Then I masked off neck ready for front of headstock colour. After Spraying the colour I removed the masking and hung it up to dry. It is now ready for headstock logo and final coating of clear lacquer. I will be doing this next week.

Sea Foam Green with Binding – Part 2

Rosie’s Guitar

Following on from Part 1 – after removing the masking tape  a little work is necessary to remove any of the colour which has bled onto the binding. This is done by scraping with a blade.

After this I flatted the surface of the colour coat with 400-800g sandpaper, then the guitar body is ready for gloss.

The neck is also flatted back and then the water decal logo is applied.

The guitar is then sprayed with lacquer. Although it looks nice and shiny the guitar will benefit from a final sanding with really fine paper (1200-2000g) before being polished to a deep shine. The guitar will then be ready for Rosie to come back for the final assembly.

Rosie, Kevin,Duncan and Moyra continue to build…….

Rosie came to finish the woodwork on his second guitar. This one will be fitted with ‘variax’ electronics ripped out from a guitar he bought on ebay. It was quite a bit of work – he needed to make a lot of extra patterns to accommodate the parts. Now he will leave it with us as he wants a full gloss paint job. Billy will be painting it sea foam green. Rosie will be back in a few weeks for assembly and set up.

Kevin came for 3 days to start making his bass. During that time he pretty much finished the neck. Here you can see him sanding around the edge of the headstock. Next time he will make the body and finish the bass. This is Kevin’s second instrument made on the course.

Last time Duncan came he glued the back onto his acoustic. Now he has to bind it. He is using rosewood strips for this which must be pre-bent before they can be glued on. You can see his body clamped to the bench – he has just inlaid a piece of rosewood for the tail piece end graft.

Well, Moyra is making a beautiful parlour acoustic from cocobolo, she has made her front, back, and sides and will start assembling the box next time.

Manchester Guitar Show – Haydock Park

Manchester Guitar Show – Haydock Park

Best ever stand at a show……

Jon played his Bailey and demoed for us on the main stage. He was absolutely brilliant and blew us all away with his great songs and obviously fantastic guitar. Thanks for that Jon!

Joe came along to show off his BYO guitar and play on our stand – cheers Joe!

We should have taken some pics of the guitars eh? We are always too busy talking to people at these shows to think too much about taking pictures.  If you have any  send em to me and I’ll post em.
